a key unit in the Columbia Basin Project of the U.S. Bureau of
Reclamation for flood control, irrigation, and power generation. Has the
largest power-producing capacity (6,480 mw) in the U.S. Impounds

Columbia Plateau. Banks L., a large reservoir at N end of Grand Coulee
gorge, controls water supply to more than 500,000 acres/202,350 ha to
the valley and the plateau. Entire reservoir, including 35-mi/56-km long
Spokane R. Arm (extends E to Little Falls Dam), is in Coulee Dam Natl.
Recreation Area. Located on the Pacific flyway, a chief N-S migratory
route, the area has a great variety of waterfowl and land birds. Grand
Coulee (1990 pop. 1,150) and Coulee Dam (1990 pop. 1,087) were founded
by the U.S. govt. in 1935-1936 as construction, operational, and housing
bases for the dam.
