The Ohio River begins there the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers converge at Pittsburgh, PA and flows for 981 miles, forming the borders of Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois before flowing into the mighty Mississippi at Cairo, IL. The Ohio River is generally 1000 to 1600 ft. wide with a depth of 10 to 20 ft. Thirteen lock and dam systems allows year round navigation for commercial towboats and barges which carry more bulk cargo than any other waterway in the US. The Ohio's main tributaries include the Kanawha, Scioto, Miami, Wabash, Kentucky, Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers as well as numerous smaller waterways affording many scenic and adventurous opportunities to explore. The metropolitan cities of Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Louisville, and many quaint historic river towns are situated along the Ohio River.
