Solar Electric Systems for Homeowners

With the constantly rising prices of oil and gas many homeowners are investigating solar power as an alternative source of electricity or reduce electric bills.

With Solar Power you can actually watch you electric meter run backwards!
During bright days solar electric systems often generate more electricity than is needed. Surplus electricity automatically flows out through the electric meter and causes the meter to spin backwards. The homeowner builds an electricity credit for this power which is basically being sold back to the power company.

Is your home "solar compatible"?
Roof orientation:
For the best results your roof should be facing south.
Shading from trees:
Your roof should not be blocked by trees or other obstructions producing shade. Best results require sun for at least 7-8 hours/day, year round.

Are you connected to an electric utility such as LIPA, ConEd, Central Hudson, NYSEG or ORU, which makes you eligible for state solar electric rebates?

The economics of investing in a solar electric system for your home or business varies depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Solar system performance - a function of orientation, pitch (slope) and shading issues
  • Electric rates - depends on your individual utility rates (note that rates in NJ, NY and CT have all increased from as little as 7.7% to nearly 40% for some rate payers -- the economics below assume these new rates)
  • Utility or state subsidies (usually referred to as rebates)
  • 30% federal investment tax credit, with a cap of $2,000 for residences
  • 25% state income tax credit for NY residents, with a cap of $5,000 (none in NJ or CT)
